DAYTON, OH — A band of rain will move across Dayton and the Miami Valley on Friday, bringing wet roads in the morning and a noticeable drop in temperatures through the day. Most areas are expected to get 0.10 to 0.50 inch of rain, and a few spots may get a bit more. No flooding threat is expected, though, because the rain will move through quickly and any heavier downpours should be brief. Skies dry out and temperatures cool just in time for Friday night football, so fans should dress for a chilly evening.
Rain Arrives Friday Morning in the North
The 6:30 a.m. Friday futurecast shows rain already moving across the northern part of the region. The heaviest bands stretch from Winchester and Richmond in eastern Indiana through Greenville, Celina, Sidney, Troy, Wapakoneta and Bellefontaine. Pockets of moderate to heavier rain show up near Sidney and Troy, and around Winchester.
Farther south, including Dayton, Springfield, Xenia, Springboro, Oxford, Liberty and Wilmington, early Friday morning looks mostly dry, but rain is expected to spread south as the morning goes on.
Midday Rain Shifts South Toward Dayton and Wilmington
By 1 p.m. Friday, the rain is forecast to cover much of the Miami Valley, including Dayton, Eaton, Oxford, Springboro and Liberty. Heavier bands are expected to shift into the southeastern part of the region, around Xenia, Wilmington and areas south of Springboro, where some downpours could briefly turn moderate to heavy.
The rain is clearing out of the northern counties by midday, including Celina, Wapakoneta and Bellefontaine, as the system keeps moving southeast.
Drying Out by Friday Evening
By 5 p.m. Friday, the futurecast shows the rain almost entirely gone from the region. Only a few lingering showers are left on the far southeastern edge beyond Wilmington. Dry conditions return to Dayton, Springfield, Troy, Sidney, Richmond and the rest of the Miami Valley heading into the evening.
That timing is good news for anyone with evening plans, including high school football games across southwest Ohio and eastern Indiana.
Rain Totals Stay Light
Rainfall totals are expected to average 0.10 to 0.50 inch across the region. A few spots under heavier downpours could go slightly above that range. Because the rain is progressive, moving through steadily without stalling, and the heavier downpours will be short, flooding is not a concern with this system.
Drivers should still expect wet roads and slower travel during the Friday morning commute and around midday, especially on Interstate 70, Interstate 75 and Interstate 675.
Temperatures Fall Through the Day
Along with the rain, temperatures will drop through the day Friday as cooler air moves in behind the system. Instead of warming up through the afternoon, many areas may feel cooler by evening than they did in the morning.
The cooler, drier air will set up a crisp, fall-like evening across Dayton and the surrounding communities.
Dress Warm for Friday Night Football
Fans heading to Friday night football games should dress in layers, since evening temperatures will feel noticeably cooler after the rain. A jacket or sweatshirt, along with a blanket for the bleachers, is a good idea. Fields and bleachers may still be damp from the earlier rain, so bring a towel or seat cushion too.
