WAYNE, MI — Wayne police are looking into what they believe may be a repeat quick-change scam after a woman allegedly took $40 from a Dairy Queen on South Wayne and Chestnut on Tuesday night. Security video from the restaurant appears to show a customer using a small purchase to create confusion at the register.
Investigators say the woman ordered about $3 worth of food and paid with a $50 bill. In the video, she then appears to turn away from the counter and tuck what police say were two $20 bills up her sleeve before coming back to ask for change she may already have had.

The footage circulating from the store shows how quickly the transaction unfolded. After the woman paid with the large bill, she turned from the counter, then returned and continued arguing about the exchange with the clerk.
Police say the teenager working the counter then handed over another $40. The woman took the cash and left, according to the account being investigated by officers. The sequence has led police to treat the matter as a suspected quick-change scam rather than a simple payment mix-up.
Police suspect the same woman may have targeted other businesses
Wayne police say they believe the woman may have used the same method at other stores in surrounding communities and downriver. That possibility is part of why officers are treating the case as something larger than a single disputed transaction.
The department has not publicly identified the woman, and the investigation remains active. Police have not said how many other locations may have been affected, but they believe the pattern matches the same type of scam seen elsewhere. The video is now being reviewed as part of that broader effort.
Nearby businesses say the alleged scam hits workers hard
People who work and shop near the Dairy Queen described frustration over what happened, especially because the clerk was a teenager. Several said the incident feels especially unfair when a young employee is placed in a stressful cash-handling situation.
Dallas Huggins said targeting a teenager made the incident worse. Ron Hankel explained the basic trick as a confusing cash exchange designed to make a clerk lose track of what was handed over. Linda Adkins called the behavior calculated, saying it appeared planned rather than accidental.
Business owners and regulars defend the restaurant and its staff
Nakyia Stubbs, who owns Fab Life Salon and Spa near the Dairy Queen, said the young worker “didn’t stand a chance” and argued that the teenager could easily be confused by a fast-moving exchange. She said the incident was especially troubling because it involved a kid behind the counter.
Stubbs also defended the Dairy Queen itself, saying the staff are good people and do not deserve to be treated that way. Amber Williams, a regular customer, said she hopes police identify the suspect. She added that the restaurant is a good place and said she was disappointed by what happened there.
Why quick-change scams remain a problem for small shops
Quick-change scams rely on speed, distraction and pressure at the register. A customer makes a small purchase, uses a large bill and then keeps changing the terms of the exchange until the cashier loses track of what money has already been given back.
That is why the method can be difficult for younger or less experienced employees to spot in the moment. In this case, the suspected loss was $40, but the larger concern for local businesses is the possibility that the same person may keep repeating the tactic at more than one store.
