Did You Know? (Pig Edition)

Zach’s pig when it was a baby.

Zach Baird, Reporter/Writer

Pigs come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. They generally have stocky bodies, large shovel-like heads, and flat snouts. Pigs are extremely smart… even smarter than your dog! They can even have the mental capacity of a three year old child! Young pigs that are trained can learn their name in just a few weeks! Pigs are also naturally clean animals, but because they can’t sweat and are sensitive to the sun, they use mud for sunscreen and a natural body coolant. Pigs’ snouts are used to dig and root for food. However, they are not just for that though. Their sense of smell is about 2,000 times better than ours, so they can smell even the smallest truffles deep in the ground. Pigs are all around great animals. They help us with everything from finding truffles to feeding the people of the world.
