1.) How long have you been teaching? How many years at Diamond?
This is my fifteenth year teaching, and also my fifteenth year at Diamond.
2.)What’s your favorite part about teaching? And what made you choose Diamond?
I like watching musicals with my students. I’ll never forget the first time I showed the 25th Anniversary stage performance of Phantom of the Opera. At the end, the class was completely attentive and gasped collectively at a key moment at the end. That made my day.
I graduated from Neosho High School, and I knew I liked the area. It’s so pretty here. We moved to Joplin, and my husband got a job at Freeman. It all came together.
3.)What clubs or activities are you involved in?
I’m the coach for speech and debate, and I am a sponsor for Thespian Troupe 2387.
4.) Are you planning on having a play this year? If not, why?
I’m not sure about a play this year. We won’t do one in the fall, and we’ll see what current conditions are in the spring.
5.) Do you have any details you could give us about the play? Theme? When? Etc.
I have no idea what we’ll do. We’ll see what it’s like in the spring.
We are hosting a virtual speech tournament from Oct. 19-23. We currently have 15 schools entered. Students from those schools will submit videos for judging. We have one live event via Zoom that we will host on the evening of Oct. 23. We are also starting our season at Willard’s virtual tournament Oct. 14-17. We’re lucky that speech translates pretty well to virtual platforms.
6.) Have you always wanted to be a teacher? If no, then what did you originally want to do?
I used to “play school” when I was little, and I’ve always loved to read. If I could do it all over again, I might look for a job with travel or travel writing.
7.) Favorite quote or piece of advice you’d like to share.
Isn’t it funny how easy it is to roll your eyes and how hard it is to roll up your sleeves? Stop criticizing and lend a hand!
8.) Just for fun, if you could have any superpower what would it be?
Time travel might be fun.
9.) Also for fun, if you were an animal which animal would you be?
My kids say I’m like a cat because I like to curl up and take a nap on a lazy afternoon.
