Is Plant Based Meat Healthier?

Gabriela Vizueth, Reporter

Plant based meat is a growing trend that is encouraging people to eat more fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. As consumer demands keep growing so the the food substitutes. Eggs, dairy, and meat are being substituted with plant based items, but are these items healthier for you? Burger king just recently launched the Impossible Whopper which is a burger made with plant based meat. Companies producing the meat say it has the same flavor, juiciness, and sizzle just like real meat. They are even made to “bleed” like real meat!

The meat is made without GMO’s, soy and gluten but has a pretty long list of ingredients. It includes: Water, Pea Protein Isolate, Expeller-Pressed Canola Oil, Refined Coconut Oil, Rice Protein, Natural Flavors, Cocoa Butter, Mung Bean Protein, Methylcellulose, Potato Starch, Apple Extract, Salt, Potassium Chloride, Vinegar, Lemon Juice Concentrate, Sunflower Lecithin, Pomegranate Fruit Powder, Beet Juice Extract (for color).

Protein in the meat comes from rice, peas, and mung bean and the fat comes from the canola oil, coconut oil, and cocoa butter. Instead of using eggs to bind the ingredients together they use a substance called Methylcellulose which is also used in ice cream, jams, and sauces.

Regular meat and plant based meat have about the same nutritional value but the plant based meat has more fiber in it. So, rather you prefer actual meat or plant based meat is up to you and your opinion.
