Skincare products have been a hot topic on social media websites for several years. In recent years, social media influencers have become more and more popular with promotions. On top of that, there are countless television advertisements featuring products. Business establishments set aside aisles to store and sell all of these products. With various items on the market, it’s hard for consumers to know which product will work best for their skin as well as what ingredients are in them. However, what does it all mean?

To begin, what is the skincare industry and how did it grow to what it is today? Skincare is defined as “the range of practices that support skin integrity, enhance its appearance and relieve skin conditions,” according to Wikipedia. The skincare industry is expected to be worth about $500 billion globally, and it was worth $93.5 billion in 2019 alone. Skincare, as well as cosmetics, appears to have started around 6,000 years ago during the time of the Egyptians. From there, skincare began to grow from there with a particular rise in the 1900s with Carmex (1937), sunscreen (1944), Estee Lauder (1946), and more created in this time.  The 1980s saw the rise of a new type of skincare: natural. Natural skincare means that the products have fewer chemicals in them and are made with more organic ingredients. However, what are the products that these companies invented? These companies invented several types of products: face masks, face/body wash, chemical peels, and more.

Face masks come in two different forms: sheet and clay masks. Sheet masks are a convenient way for people to do their skincare quickly. Sheet masks are masks that come in one piece and do not have to be mixed or rubbed into the face. This is where clay masks differ. Clay masks have to be applied evenly and by hand. Face mask of both types can do several different things. Both of these products can be found at places such as Walmart and Target as well as Ulta.

Face wash is something else that comes in a wide variety. Similar to face masks, they do different things depending on the type of skin that people have. Some are foaming, meaning that it turns into bubbles when it is used. Others have to be left on for a few minutes before being rinsed off. Once again, these can be found in most stores. If you’re unsure what your skin needs, talk to a dermatologist or someone who works at a specialty beauty store, such as Sephora or Ulta.

Chemical peels are things that have to be done by a dermatologist. Personally, I have had a chemical peel, and these hurt like crazy. Chemical peels are when a doctor applies chemicals to the face. Different chemicals can create a different outcome. Most chemical peels are done to remove acne scars.

There are many types of beauty routines out there. It can take a long time to find one that fits someone’s specific skin type. Going to a dermatologist can help because they specialize in skin care routines, and they can prescribe medicine on a case-by-case basis that can treat the condition better.
