Early forms of golf trace all the way back to the Romans when they used to play a game called paganica where they would hit a stuffed leather ball with a bent stick. There have also been other forms of the game from China to Scotland. The original modern game of golf comes from Scotland and in the 15th century. They passed many laws banning golf and soccer because it interred with archery practice, which was very important at that time for national defense. The first act was passed in 1457 by James II The King of Scotland and continued until 1941. The ban was lifted in 1500. After that, golf was regularly played by royals, and then, in 1894, the United States Golf Association (USGA) was formed. The very first outdoor golf course to open up outside of Scotland was in London in 1766, and it was called the Blackheath Club. Along with leather, golf balls were also once made of wood from beech and box trees, and they were also made out of feathers at one point. The feather ball was stuffed with chicken or goose feathers and costed the equivalent of $10-$20 in today’s currency due to the expense of labor and materials.
